One of the most important aspects of playing any instrument well is the ability to play in time. Tempo is how fast or slow a song is and is registered in beats per minute or BPM. A typical slow song might be 60-90 BPM and a fast song might be 100-160 BPM. Practice makes perfect! Try to analyze the beat and tempo of everything you hear. Whether it's a TV jingle, radio song or one of the ringtones you hear on cheap mobile phones, it's good enough to practice on! It's not easy to play in time, or to 'find the one' in a rhythm but with time you'll get it!
Below are links to two fantastic sites that offer free online metronomes to aid you in your practice. Practicing with a metronome can be challenging at first, but stick with it and it will get easier and you will begin to see amazing results in your playing.
